What simple things can I do when a friend or family member has experienced a loss?
Hugs often are better than any words. Just hold them.

Tell them, “I want to help” and ask them “what specifically do you need right now?”

Remember to call periodically just to say “hi. I’m thinking about you”. Many times the funeral is over, the cards, flowers and lasagnas stop coming and the person is forgotten and lonely.

Suggest a grief support group, especially if a person seems stuck in grief after 6 months

Just listen and nod your head.

Stay present with the survivor when they are talking and don’t advise or minimize their experience.

Use the words “I can understand how you would feel that way” and “I know” and “I miss him too” softly and often.
